| Jennifer Love Hewitt (known to her friends simply as "Love") defines the essence of cool. You've seen her on "Party of Five." She's been interviewed on late-night TV. Her image is plastered on magazine covers. She may have only caught the public eye in the last few years, but as we shall see, her singing and acting talents have won her the admiration of fans for a long, long time.
Born on February 21, 1979 in Waco, Texas, to parents Pat and Tom Hewitt, Love's career was about to launch itself quickly. At the age of three, she managed to get away from her mom at a dinner club, and soon found herself on stage singing "Help Me Make It Through The Night." Within two years, she was already starting dance lessons.
Love's charm won her the title of a "living doll" in a Texas beauty pageant. By the time she was nine, she was submerged in show business as a member of the Texas Show Team, a dance troupe which travelled to the U.S.S.R. and Denmark. At age 10, Love began a world-wide promotional tour as a spokesperson for L.A. Gear. Soon after, the Hewitts headed off to the land of opportunities, Los Angeles, where Love landed a series of national commercials for Mattel Toys.
Now this is where the story gets interesting. Love got her first starring role in "Kids Incorporated," a TV show in which she played the role of "Robin" from 1989 to 1991. Along with Kids Inc., she performed on the 1992 UCP Telethon. She was offered a co-starring role (Bernadette Moody) on the TV show "Shaky Ground" and promptly left Kids Inc. The show only lasted one season.
Aside from such acting pursuits, Love sang "Please Save Us A World" (along with her Kids Inc. co-stars) before the United Nations Assembly. This song would become the theme song for the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janerio, in which Love was appointed a Youth Ambassador. A music video of "Please Save Us A World" was made, which featured Love and many other young celebrities.
So at this point, Love is starting to make a name for herself, both in acting and singing. Meanwhile, she appeared in the 1992 movie "Munchies" as Andrea, and the 1991 "Dance! Workout With Barbie" video. Love sang all the songs on the video, but no soundtrack was ever released. She then appeared in the pilots for "Running Wilde" and "Just Family", which unfortunately were not developed into full television series. The TV special "The Magic 7" came next.
Also in 1992, Love's first pop album, "Love Songs," was released, but only in Japan. Singles were released in Europe as well.
Love's co-starring role of Heather Lofton in the made-for-TV 1993 movie "Little Miss Millions" (a.k.a. "Home for Christmas") got her some attention. The same year, she returned to the big screen with her character "Margaret" in "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit," a role that demonstrated Love's versatility both as a singer and an actor.
In 1994, Love got the role of Franny Byrd on the critically-acclaimed television series "Byrds of Paradise." Love then took over the role of Cassidy McKenna on "McKenna," which only lasted for a few episodes.
In 1995, Love's American pop debut began with her second album, "Let's Go Bang." This featured one song which she co-wrote: "Free To Be A Woman." By this time, a Fox TV show called "Party of Five" had already been running for one year, but the show lacked a certain something. It needed some spark. It needed a character whose spirit was overwhelmingly cool. Now who would fill this role? Love, of course! So in 1995, Love got the role of Sarah Reeves, who's had an ongoing relationship with Bailey Salinger (Scott Wolfe) ever since.
The following year, Love got the role of Brooke Figler in the movie "House Arrest." In August, 1996, her self-titled third album was released, featuring many memorable songs which she's performed at numerous concerts since.
Love then appeared as Leah in the 1997 movie "Trojan War" (a.k.a. "Rescue Me"). Next, she was a host in the TV movie "The Senior Prom." But the movie that solidified her star status was her role as Julie James in "I Know What You Did Last Summer." It's one of those teenage horror flicks with plenty of gore that's already becoming a cult classic. The sequal is supposed to be coming out later in 1998.
This year also includes the release of two other Love films, "Can't Hardly Wait," where she plays the part of Amanda Beckett, and "Telling You," as the character Deb Friedman.
Love is also expected to have a role in the 1999 movie "The Suburbans".
Until then, have fun watching Love on "Party of Five." Now that Bailey and Sarah are back together again, we'll probably see a lot more of Love in the episodes to come. |
